Planting
Plant at any time of the year when the ground can be worked. Prepare expansive planting beds or holes to assure that the roots of your perennials will quickly establish and begin absorbing water and nutrients. As versatile as this group of plants is, some only do well in full sun; others if planted in full sun will struggle and die. Coordinate times of bloom, heights, and flower and leaf colors. It helps to map out your perennial beds on paper to assure garden harmony and succession.
Watering
To ensure good root growth, water regularly for several weeks after planting if rainfall is limited.
Mulching
Keep your perennials mulched to prevent competition from weeds. Herbicides can be difficult to use in perennial beds due to the diversity of plants you may select, so read labels carefully. A slowly decomposing layer of compost is usually all that is needed. Work compost into entire beds but not into individual planting holes.
