Shrubs
We carry an impressive inventory of both native and exotic shrubs, with special emphasis on selections that we know will perform well in this area. Whether you need foundation plants, are building a new border, want to attract birds or butterflies, or need to disguise an unwanted view, chances are our knowledgeable staff will steer you to the right choices.

It is common in this area to have problems with deer, or excessive wind, or very hot or wet or dry or shady environments, (or combinations of the above), and we strive to carry plants that will fill your needs in these special circumstances.

We boast an unrivalled collection of Hydrangeas, Viburnums, Spireas, and Weigelas, along with new and wonderful cultivars of Hibiscus and Magnolia. Please be sure to pick up the new catalog of shrubs at the nursery. It is packed with information about siting, size, and special features. And don’t forget that our friendly, experienced staff will be more than happy to answer and questions.

Planting
Dig a hole at least twice as wide as the diameter of the shrub’s root ball. Do not dig too deeply. Once the plant is placed in the hole, the top of the roots should be level or slightly above level with the surface of the ground. Remove all tags, wires, or ropes from stems and trunk.

Watering
Watering during dry periods of the first growing season is crucial, especially with container-grown plants. Regardless of the season when you plant, make sure that the root ball does not dry out.

Mulching
Place mulch 2 to 3 inches deep around the shrub. Mulch slows water loss from the soil, reduces weed growth around the plant, and protects the shrub from lawn mower and string trimmer injury. Avoid overly deep mulch or piling the mulch up against the trunk of the shrub; this promotes shallow roots, disease, and pest injury.
